Fiji has issued commemorative silver pieces under Reserve Bank authority since the 1970s, but this 2007 issue marks the 50th anniversary of Sputnik 1's launch on October 4, 1957 — the event that triggered the Space Race and prompted the United States Congress to establish NASA the following year. The Soviet satellite completed 1,440 orbits before re-entering the atmosphere in January 1958.
