| Reverse description | Draped bust of Liberty facing left, her elaborately braided hair swept back and adorned with a diadem inscribed LIBERTAD. A small pendant earring is visible at the ear. The truncation of the bust is rendered with fine drapery folds. The circumferential legend EL ECUADOR EN COLOMBIA surrounds the effigy, with the denomination numeral 1, mint name QUITO, and assayer initial D. distributed in the lower field. A beaded rim frames the entire design. |

| Additional information |
Ecuador's earliest gold coinage was struck at the Quito mint, which had operated under Spanish colonial authority and continued under the new republic with considerable institutional inertia. The 2 Escudos denomination was inherited directly from the Spanish colonial monetary system — Ecuador had not yet developed an independent coinage identity, and these pieces are essentially republican issues struck on a colonial template.
The Quito mint closed permanently in 1862, making all its republican gold issues finite by definition. KM#16 spans only three years of production.
