Part of Spain's ongoing commemorative €2 program celebrating its autonomous communities, the Balearic Islands issue was released in 2004 as one of the earlier entries in what would become a long-running series. Spain was among the first eurozone members to exploit the commemorative €2 format systematically, using it to navigate regional political sensitivities — giving Catalonia, the Basque Country, and other communities their own issues helped defuse, at least symbolically, tensions over cultural recognition within the constitutional framework.
Mintage for this issue was 8 million pieces, split between the Royal Mint of Spain (FNMT) in Madrid. Most entered general circulation immediately.
