| Obverse description | The inner disc features a stylised portrait of the humanist scholar Erasmus of Rotterdam, rendered in a contemporary graphic style, occupying the left portion of the field. Radiating from and around the portrait is a network of connecting links representing the intellectual and cultural exchanges fostered by the Erasmus Programme across Europe; several of these links coalesce to form additional stars, symbolising the synergy between participating nations. The numeral '35', commemorating the 35th anniversary of the programme, emerges prominently from the star motif in a modern typographic treatment.
