Puig i Cadafalch remains a politically charged figure in Catalonia — an architect and archaeologist who also served as president of the Mancomunitat de Catalunya from 1917 until Primo de Rivera's dictatorship dissolved it in 1924. Spain's decision to issue this coin in 2017 is striking given that the same year saw Madrid invoke Article 155 to suspend Catalan autonomy following the independence referendum. No official commentary acknowledged the timing.
