| Obverse description | Central inner disc depicts the Four Ionic Columns ('Les Quatre Columnes') originally erected by architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch on Montjuïc Hill in Barcelona, Catalonia, rendered in relief against a plain field. The legend 'CATALUNYA' appears above, with the dates '1867' (the birth year of Puig i Cadafalch) and '2017' below, referencing the centenary context of the design. The outer ring is composed of the standard bimetallic alloy with fine milled striations. |

Puig i Cadafalch remains a politically charged figure in Catalonia — an architect and archaeologist who also served as president of the Mancomunitat de Catalunya from 1917 until Primo de Rivera's dictatorship dissolved it in 1924. Spain's decision to issue this coin in 2017 is striking given that the same year saw Madrid invoke Article 155 to suspend Catalan autonomy following the independence referendum. No official commentary acknowledged the timing.
