| Obverse description | Central brass field depicts a stylised rendering of the Riga City Gate tower from the city's coat of arms, featuring two flanking turrets surmounted by flags, with crossed keys and a crown above the arched gateway in the centre. The date '2004' is inscribed in the field, split to either side of the tower. Latvia formally joined the EU in May 2004 but would not adopt the euro until 2014 — a full decade later. These trial pieces, produced in 2004 for technical testing and distribution to vending machine manufacturers and banking equipment suppliers, were never intended for public release. The French and Spanish terms on the coin's name reflect the multinational testing protocol coordinated through the European Central Bank.
