Obverse description Within a beaded inner circle, the four-line inscription 'SOCIETE / ANONYME / DE LA / GRANDE COMORE' is displayed across the field in bold raised lettering. A decorative wreath or floral border frames the central legend, running along the interior of the beaded ring. The square format with rounded corners gives the piece its distinctive emergency token character.

Additional information

The Grande Comore tokens issued under the Société Anonyme were plantation scrip — private fiduciary currency circulated on the island's ylang-ylang and vanilla estates to pay laborers in a medium redeemable only at company stores. The French colonial administration tolerated such arrangements across its Indian Ocean territories well into the twentieth century, which is precisely why these pieces exist at all.

The 1915 date places this token mid-war, when metropolitan French coin supply to peripheral territories had effectively collapsed.
