Sopronnyék was one of the larger Austro-Hungarian prisoner-of-war camps operating during the First World War, and its internal currency was a practical necessity — Allied prisoners could not be permitted to accumulate spendable Austrian crowns that might fund escape attempts or bribe guards. Camp scrip kept economic activity contained within the wire. Globus, a Budapest commercial printer with no particular connection to official monetary work, produced this note under wartime contract.
The denomination in korona mirrors the civilian monetary system but carried no redemption value outside the camp perimeter.
