| Additional information |
Lesotho's coinage as an independent nation dates only to 1966, when the former British protectorate of Basutoland shed its colonial designation. The Kingdom of Lesotho — entirely landlocked within South Africa — conducted much of its daily commerce through South African Rand, making its own fractional coinage largely ceremonial in economic function. Moshoeshoe II, the issuing monarch here, was twice deposed: first in 1990 by the military government of Justin Lekhanya, then permanently in 1996 following a second removal that placed his son Letsie III on the throne.
