Obverse description Cast copper cash coin of traditional East Asian form, featuring a central square perforation surrounded by a raised square rim. Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are disposed in cruciform arrangement around the central hole: 常 (sang) at top, 平 (pyong) at bottom, 通 (tong) at right, and 寶 (bo) at left, together reading 常平通寶 (Sangpyong Tongbo), the standard legend of the Joseon dynasty Sangpyong currency series. The characters are bold and well-formed in relief against a flat field, with a broad raised outer rim encircling the design.
