| Obverse description | Round cast copper coin with a central square perforation, surrounded by a raised square rim. Four large Chinese characters in traditional regular script (kaishu) are arranged in the four cardinal positions around the square hole, reading clockwise from the top: 常 (top), 通 (right), 寶 (left — partially visible), and 平 (bottom), forming the legend 常平通寶 (Sangpyong Tongbo). The bold, well-formed characters fill the field between the square inner rim and the raised outer rim, characteristic of the large-type (大型) series struck under the Joseon Dynasty. |
