Obverse description Central square hole flanked by four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform fashion within the coin field. Reading top to bottom: 常平 (Sang Pyong), denoting the Joseon Dynasty's Sangpyeong (Ever-Normal) Treasury bureau; reading right to left: 通寶 (Tong Bo), the standard term for circulating currency. The characters are rendered in a bold, regularised script typical of Joseon cast coinage, with the square hole at centre serving as a defining structural element of the design.
