Below the arms, a letterpress text records the Empire's promise to pay two pesos under the Decree of 20 December 1822, dated México 1 de Enero de 1823, with three manuscript signatures at the foot; both lateral margins carry a geometric border incorporating the repeated legend DOS PESOS. |

El Imperio Mexicano — Agustín de Iturbide's short-lived First Mexican Empire — issued paper currency in 1823 during a period of acute fiscal desperation. The empire collapsed the same year; Iturbide abdicated in March 1823 and was exiled, meaning these notes had an operational lifespan of months at most. Originals are extraordinarily rare, which is precisely why replicas exist in the first place.
