Additional information

Ghana's independence in March 1957 made it the first sub-Saharan African country to break from colonial rule, and the anniversary issues of 1977 were produced during a period of considerable political turbulence — the country was then under the military government of General Ignatius Acheampong, whose Supreme Military Council had seized power in 1972 and was, by 1977, facing serious internal opposition and economic deterioration driven by falling cocoa prices.

The X# prefix in the Krause reference indicates a non-circulating bullion or commemorative piece not assigned to the standard national coinage sequence. Struck in crown-standard .917 gold, these were aimed squarely at the collector market rather than domestic circulation.
