Additional information

This issue commemorates Ernest Shackleton's 1914–1917 Endurance expedition, specifically the overland crossing of South Georgia completed by Shackleton, Frank Worsley, and Tom Crean in May 1916 — a 36-hour march across unmapped glaciated terrain undertaken without proper equipment after their ship had been crushed in the Weddell Sea. The crossing covered roughly 32 miles and ended at the Stromness whaling station, where the three men arrived so dishevelled that station workers initially failed to recognise them.
