Additional information

British Indian Ocean Territory has no permanent civilian population — the indigenous Chagossians were forcibly removed by the British government between 1968 and 1973 to make way for the US military base at Diego Garcia. The territory issues coins purely for collector revenue, with no circulation economy to speak of. This 2009 piece, catalogued as KM#1, is the first such issue, establishing a numismatic program on the back of a administration that remains the subject of ongoing international legal disputes over sovereignty and the right of return.
