Reverse description The copper-nickel centre depicts a detailed rendering of a crane (Grus) standing upon an astronomical star chart, with the constellation pattern of Grus rendered as connected star nodes in the lower field. A navigational degree scale ring, marked with cardinal directions N and S and degree graduations, overlays the central design, conveying the astronomical theme. The inscription CRANE - GRUS appears in the right-centre field. The nickel brass outer ring bears the legend SOUTHERN CONSTELLATIONS arcing across the upper portion, while the denomination £2 is inscribed at the base. The crane's head extends into the outer ring at the upper left, bridging the two metallic zones for artistic effect.

Additional information

Pobjoy Mint produced this piece for the British Indian Ocean Territory, one of several constellation-themed issues in a series that works through the southern sky's lesser-known asterisms. Grus, named by the Dutch navigators Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman during their 1595–1597 expedition to the East Indies, was among twelve constellations they charted specifically to fill gaps in southern celestial cartography unknown to ancient Greek astronomers.

BIOT issues from Pobjoy carry legal tender status but see no domestic circulation — the territory's permanent population is exclusively military personnel.
