| Obverse description | The copper-nickel centre features a right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, with pearl drop earrings and a pearl necklace, as designed by Raphael Maklouf for the Pobjoy Mint. The legend BRITISH ANTARCTIC TERRITORY arcs around the upper portion of the nickel brass outer ring, with the date 2022 inscribed at the base, flanked by two small circular decorative stops. The mintmark PM appears in the lower left of the outer ring. |

| Reverse description | The copper-nickel centre depicts a detailed rendering of a crane (Grus) standing upon an astronomical star chart, with the constellation pattern of Grus rendered as connected star nodes in the lower field. A navigational degree scale ring, marked with cardinal directions N and S and degree graduations, overlays the central design, conveying the astronomical theme. The inscription CRANE - GRUS appears in the right-centre field. The nickel brass outer ring bears the legend SOUTHERN CONSTELLATIONS arcing across the upper portion, while the denomination £2 is inscribed at the base. The crane's head extends into the outer ring at the upper left, bridging the two metallic zones for artistic effect. |

Pobjoy Mint produced this piece for the British Indian Ocean Territory, one of several constellation-themed issues in a series that works through the southern sky's lesser-known asterisms. Grus, named by the Dutch navigators Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman during their 1595–1597 expedition to the East Indies, was among twelve constellations they charted specifically to fill gaps in southern celestial cartography unknown to ancient Greek astronomers.
BIOT issues from Pobjoy carry legal tender status but see no domestic circulation — the territory's permanent population is exclusively military personnel.
