South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands holds the unusual status of a British Overseas Territory with no permanent civilian population, administered from the Falkland Islands. Its coins are legal tender in name only — no economy exists to spend them in — making every issue a deliberate collector product rather than circulating currency. This particular piece was issued five years after Diana's death in the Paris tunnel crash of August 1997, capitalizing on the wave of commemorative issues that flooded the market through the late 1990s and into the early 2000s.
