Queen Elizabeth Land was formally named by the UK government in December 2012 — a unilateral act that drew immediate protest from Argentina, which claims the same territory as part of its own Antarctic sector. The naming was widely read as a deliberate diplomatic signal during the ongoing Falklands sovereignty dispute, timed to coincide with the 60th anniversary of Elizabeth II's accession.
