The Slaty Egret (Egretta vinaceigula) is one of southern Africa's rarest herons, with its global population largely confined to the Okavango Delta and Chobe floodplains — both within Botswana's borders. By 1986, IUCN had flagged the species as vulnerable, and the coin's issue coincided with growing international pressure on southern African governments to demonstrate conservation commitments beyond rhetoric. Botswana's wildlife economy was already being restructured around ecotourism rather than trophy hunting, and this series gave the Bank of Botswana a diplomatic as well as numismatic vehicle for that position.
