| Obverse description | Laureate and draped bust of King Ferdinand VII facing right, occupying the central field of the host coin. A rectangular lattice countermark applied in 1841 by Cuban authorities is stamped over the king's neck and lower portrait area, consisting of a grid pattern with a six-pointed star in the upper-left cell. The circular legend around the bust reads FERDN·VII· to the left and DEI·GRATIA to the right, with the date 1813 positioned at the base of the portrait. |

In 1841, Cuba's colonial administration authorized countermarking circulating Spanish coinage to validate it for continued local use — a pragmatic response to chronic coin shortages that plagued Caribbean trade throughout the early nineteenth century. The host coin here is a Madrid-minted 2 Reales, KM#474.3, already in circulation before receiving the Cuban punch.
Countermarked pieces vary considerably in host coin condition at the time of punching, and the mark's placement is inconsistent across surviving examples.
