Obverse description Obverse of this cob-type (macuquina) coinage struck at Potosí, bearing the royal legend of Philip III of Spain. The flan is irregularly shaped, as characteristic of hammered cob coinage, with the die impression only partially visible across the surface. The legend PHILIPPVS III D. G. HISPANIARVM runs along the periphery, though much of it is lost beyond the planchet's edge. The overall strike is weak and off-center, typical of early colonial Potosí production, with the field exhibiting deep flow lines and significant surface porosity.
