The 2 Rupee note was one of the first issues produced under the Reserve Bank of India following independence, replacing the earlier Government of India series that had carried the portrait of George VI. The RBI had technically been in existence since 1935, but the post-1947 rupee notes required a deliberate break in visual language — the King's image removed, the new national identity still being negotiated in the design committees.

Pick 27 runs across a long sequence of signature varieties, making signature attribution the primary collecting variable for this issue. At least seven different signing officials appear across the series, and misidentification is common in dealer lots.
