Obverse description The obverse is entirely covered with dense, intricately executed Nasta'liq and Thuluth Arabic calligraphy arranged in concentric registers filling the entire field. The central legend proclaims the Shahada and the names of the Twelve Imams of Twelver Shi'a Islam, beginning with the declaration of faith in the inner field and continuing outward with the names and epithets of each Imam from Ali ibn Abi Talib to Muhammad al-Mahdi. The script is deeply struck into the silver flan, producing high-relief lettering with a characteristic Safavid aesthetic. A dotted border separates the outer marginal legend from the inner field. The overall design reflects the pronounced Shi'a devotional character of early Safavid coinage under Shah Isma'il I.
