| Reverse description | A stylised palm tree occupies the centre of the design, its trunk dividing the date into two numerals on either side, set within a circular frame. The denomination TWO SHILLINGS appears in the legend along with BRITISH WEST AFRICA, separated by a dot. The mintmark is positioned at the base of the palm tree, above the first letter I of SHILLINGS. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border. |

| Additional information |
The British West Africa Currency Board was a London-controlled body that issued coinage for Nigeria, the Gold Coast, Sierra Leone, and the Gambia as a single currency zone — a deliberate administrative convenience that had nothing to do with the economic realities of any individual territory. The wartime years complicated supply: nickel shortages pushed the Board toward nickel brass for this series, a substitution driven entirely by strategic metal allocation during the Second World War.
Production ran across the Royal Mint and its Pretoria branch depending on the year, which accounts for minor variation in quality across the date range.
