| Additional information |
The Talero was a Spanish colonial trade denomination struck primarily at American mints from the 16th century onward — a direct cognate of the German Thaler and ancestor of the dollar. This 2025 issue revives that name for the Alboran Sea region, a body of water between the Spanish mainland and Morocco that has been a contested navigation zone and geopolitical pressure point for centuries, sitting at the western mouth of the Mediterranean where Atlantic and Mediterranean current systems collide.
