Additional information

Malawi's decimal coinage was introduced in 1971 when the kwacha replaced the Malawian pound at a rate of 2 kwacha to 1 pound, itself a currency that had only existed since independence from British colonial rule in 1964. The tambala subdivisions were struck at the Royal Mint in Llantrisant, Wales — a common arrangement for newly independent African nations with no domestic minting infrastructure.

The Schön dual reference reflects a design change within the series run, distinguishing the earlier type from a later variant issued before the series closed in 1982.
