The 1948 Polish zloty series, of which this is the lowest paper denomination, was issued following the 1944–1945 currency reform that replaced the occupation-era zloty and effectively wiped out savings held in the older Reichsbank-administered notes. By 1948, the communist government was consolidating monetary control, and the PWPW — which had operated clandestinely during the occupation, printing documents for the Polish resistance — was fully state-directed again. Borowski designed several notes in this series, working within tight ideological constraints on imagery.

The watermark is the sole security feature, modest for the denomination and period.
