Additional information

Ghana redenominated its currency in 1965 and again faced severe inflationary pressure through the 1980s under successive military governments, including Rawlings's PNDC regime. By the time this denomination entered production, the 20 Cedis represented a fraction of its original purchasing power — a common fate for mid-range denominations in economies cycling through structural adjustment programs mandated by the IMF during that decade.
