| Obverse description | The national coat of arms of Ecuador occupies the central field, depicting a condor with spread wings perched atop an oval shield that displays Mount Chimborazo and a steamship on a river. The shield is flanked by four national flags and fronds of palm and laurel at the base. A continuous circular legend reading REPUBLICA DEL ECUADOR arcs around the periphery, with the date 1974 positioned in the lower exergue. The entire design is bordered by a fine dentilated rim. |

KM#77.2 distinguishes itself from the earlier .1 variety by a subtle but catalogued reverse die modification introduced when the Banco Central del Ecuador shifted production runs in the early 1970s. Ecuador's centavo coinage of this period was struck under contract at foreign mints — the 1974 issue produced at the Casa de Moneda in Santiago, Chile — as Ecuador lacked sufficient domestic minting capacity to meet circulation demand following rapid population growth in the coastal provinces.
