Reverse description A Cessa bird (São Tomé green pigeon, Treron sanctithomae) is depicted facing left, perched on a branch with foliage and seed pods rendered in naturalistic detail. The large numeral '20' appears prominently in the lower field, occupying the foreground. The legend 'VINTE CÊNTIMOS' arcs across the upper field, and the word 'CESSA' is inscribed at the bottom below the bird, identifying the species. The overall design fills the coin face within a beaded border.

Additional information

São Tomé and Príncipe reintroduced its own currency, the dobra, in 1977 after independence from Portugal, but the island nation's monetary policy remained heavily constrained by its dependence on cocoa export revenues and successive IMF stabilization programs. The 2017 coinage series was issued under a currency board arrangement pegging the dobra to the euro at a fixed rate, a structure formalized in 2010 that effectively transferred monetary policy decisions to Lisbon.
