Reverse description A high-relief depiction of a Lufengosaurus, a long-necked sauropodomorph dinosaur, dominates the oval field, rendered in fine sculptural detail with the animal shown in a standing three-quarter pose with its elongated neck arching upward and jaws open. Rocky terrain occupies the lower register, strewn with fossilised bones and a dinosaur skull, all selectively gilt in gold to simulate an archaeological excavation setting. The series title DINOSAURS IN ASIA is inscribed in cursive script along the right margin, while LUFENGOSAURUS appears in capital letters along the upper border. The date 2022 is engraved in the lower exergue.

Additional information

Lufengosaurus, a long-necked prosauropod first excavated in Yunnan Province in the 1930s by paleontologist C.C. Young, holds the distinction of being among the earliest dinosaurs to be extensively studied in China and the first to be mounted as a complete skeleton for public display there. Samoa has issued a series of shaped and gilt collector coins targeting the natural history market, and this piece falls squarely within that output — a frankly commercial program with no particular tie to Samoan territory or fauna.
