| Obverse description | A lion passant regardant occupies the central field, depicted in high relief in the act of prowling across a rocky outcrop, its heavily maned head turned to face the viewer and its long tail raised and curving behind. The design is engraved with considerable artistic detail, characteristic of Küchler's work at the Soho Mint. The peripheral legend SIERRA LEONE COMPANY arcs around the upper portion of the coin, while the word AFRICA appears in large letters within the lower exergual segment. The entire design is framed by a dentilated border. |
