Tajikistan introduced its somoni currency in October 2000, replacing the Tajik ruble at a rate of 1,000 to 1 — itself a currency that had only existed since 1995 following the collapse of the Soviet ruble system. The diram denominations of this first somoni series were produced in part at the Leningrad Mint, as Tajikistan lacked domestic minting infrastructure.
