| Obverse description | Uncrowned right-facing effigy of King Charles III rendered in high relief, occupying the central field. The portrait, engraved by Steven Rosati, depicts the King in civilian dress with naturalistic detailing of the hair and facial features. The circumferential legend reads CHARLES III to the left, CANADA 2025 along the upper arc, and D·G·REX to the right, all in serif capitals. The denomination 20 DOLLARS is inscribed along the lower arc. The engraver's initials SR appear discreetly below the truncation of the portrait. |

The gnomon — the shadow-casting rod at the heart of every sundial — is here rendered as a separate cast brass component, rhodium-plated and physically affixed to the coin's surface. It's a manufacturing solution the RCM has used for similar insert coins, but applying it to a functional sundial concept means the piece is, at least nominally, usable as a timekeeping instrument under the right solar conditions.
