The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, established in 1983 to replace the East Caribbean Currency Authority, issued this piece as part of its inaugural coinage series — the first struck under the new institutional framework that unified monetary policy across the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States. The ECCB's formation consolidated currency management for eight territories that had previously operated under looser colonial-era arrangements.
The Independence designation likely references one of the member territories' sovereignty transitions rather than a single regional event, as the OECS states achieved independence from Britain at staggered intervals between 1967 and 1983.
