The Bahamas gained independence from Britain on July 10, 1973, and this gold issue was part of a commemorative set released to mark the occasion — one of several denominations struck that year specifically for collectors rather than circulation. The .750 fineness is notably lower than the .900 or .9999 standard of most investment-grade gold coinage of the period, a deliberate choice that kept production costs manageable for a small island nation issuing its first sovereign coinage.
The KM#43.2 designation distinguishes it from the .585 fineness variant struck concurrently.
