Obverse description A large intaglio vignette of a mythical carp-dragon (鯉魚) in blue occupies the left portion of the note, set against a fine guilloche underprint. The bank name in both Chinese and English script, serial number, and denomination in large numerals appear at centre and upper right, accompanied by a holographic security device at far right. Two manuscript signatures of the Chief Financial Officer and Director are printed below the bilingual promise-to-pay text, with the date 1 JULY 2003 at lower centre.

Reverse description The central and right portion of the reverse is occupied by a detailed engraved vignette of the Hong Kong harbour as it appeared circa 1850, with tall-masted sailing vessels, junks, and mountainous terrain rendered in blue intaglio. A plain oval watermark zone is reserved at left, and the holographic device appears at upper left. A red guilloche border pattern frames the lower edge.
