Giesecke+Devrient's hybrid substrate — a paper-polymer composite — was adopted by a number of smaller central banks in the 2020s as a cost-performance compromise between traditional cotton-linen paper and full polymer. It offers improved durability over paper without the full tooling costs of a dedicated polymer run. Eswatini's move to this format for the 2024 series reflects a broader modernization push by a central bank that had previously relied on conventional substrates for decades.

P#B44 designation places this firmly in the new series, distinct from earlier Swazi issues printed under the kingdom's pre-2018 name. The see-through registration feature requires precise front-to-back alignment at press — a small but telling indicator of print quality commitment on a note from a nation of under 1.2 million people.
