Obverse description The obverse features the crowned monogram of Prince Albert II of Monaco at center, composed of two interlaced letters 'A' in Roman script, one facing right and one facing left, surmounted by the princely crown. The legend 'MONACO' arcs above the monogram along the upper periphery, while the date appears below the monogram flanked by the privy mark of the Monnaie de Paris and the differenti of the Chief Engraver. Twelve five-pointed stars of the European Union are arranged in a concentric ring adjacent to the inner border, forming a symbolic crown around the central device.

Additional information

Belgium's euro coinage went through two portrait updates for Albert II, and this second type also incorporates the revised European map introduced across all eurozone issues in 2007–2008 — reflecting the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the EU in 2007. The map change was a coordinated update across all participating mints, with each country responsible for phasing in the new reverse on its own production schedule.

Albert II abdicated in July 2013, replaced by Philippe. Coins bearing his effigy continued legal circulation, but new production for Belgium shifted to the Philippe series.
