Twelve stars are arranged around the periphery in the manner of the standard European coinage series. The curved legend 'BALEARIC ISLANDS' arcs along the upper rim, while the multilingual test inscription 'PROVE PROVA PROBE TEST ESSAI' is inscribed along the lower edge of the pentagon. Spain's euro coinage rotates regional motifs across a long-running series, and the Balearic Islands issue from 2004 falls within the first wave of that program. The coins entered circulation during a period of significant economic optimism in Spain — the country was then running one of the fastest-growing economies in the eurozone, fueled heavily by construction and tourism, industries in which the Balearics themselves were deeply implicated.
