Reverse description A detailed view of Häme Castle (Hämeen linna), a medieval brick fortress with multiple towers and battlements, occupies the left and central portion of the field. To the right, a facing left portrait bust of Ingeborg Aakentytär Tott, a notable 15th-century noblewoman associated with the castle, is rendered in relief with a period-appropriate headdress. The city name 'HÄMEENLINNA' arcs along the upper rim, flanked by the issue year '1997' at the top, the historical date range '1497-1507' at the lower centre, and the name 'INGEBORG AAKENTYTÄR TOTT' curving along the lower rim.

Additional information

Hämeenlinna is the birthplace of Jean Sibelius, and Finland's regional city-series coins of the 1990s were issued partly to anchor national identity during the run-up to euro adoption — a politically charged moment when the markka's days were already numbered. This piece belongs to that commemorative sequence, which the Mint of Finland produced annually through the decade with rotating municipal subjects.
