Issued to mark the 25th anniversary of Picasso's death, this coin arrived at a politically charged moment — the Spanish government had spent decades navigating the question of the artist's legacy, given that Picasso refused to return to Spain while Franco lived and left his most famous work, Guernica, in the custody of MoMA with explicit instructions it remain outside Spain until democracy was restored. The painting finally arrived in Madrid in 1981, six years after Franco's death.
