Prägarten is a small Upper Austrian municipality, and like hundreds of similar communities it resorted to locally issued Notgeld during and after the First World War when small-denomination coinage effectively vanished from circulation. These Heller notes filled the gap left by hoarded metal — a purely functional response to a shortage that the central authorities in Vienna were slow to address.
The JPR prefix in Jaksch/Pick cataloging designates Austrian municipal and local issues; the four-digit numbering places Prägarten alphabetically within that sequence, not in any order of rarity or significance.
