Malawi's Reserve Bank went through a prolonged period of issuing 20 Kwacha notes with minimal design changes across the late 1980s and into the 1990s, and the 1993 date sits within a series that collectors sometimes find difficult to distinguish from earlier printings without checking signature combinations carefully. The number of governor and cashier pairings across this period is the primary differentiator between catalogue varieties.
Thomas De La Rue had held Malawi's printing contract continuously since independence, and the cotton substrate here is consistent with their standard specification for Sub-Saharan clients during this period.
