Georgia's first post-Soviet banknote series launched in 1995, replacing the short-lived kupon lari that had itself replaced the Soviet ruble only two years earlier — a currency compressed into a remarkably brief span by hyperinflationary pressure and political instability following independence. The 20 Lari belongs to that founding series, produced by Oberthur Fiduciaire at their Chantepie facility, which handled several newly independent states' inaugural note programs during the 1990s.

The security specification is notably thin for the period — watermark only, without the metallic thread that Oberthur routinely incorporated for other clients at the same time.
