Romania began issuing polymer banknotes well ahead of most of its regional peers — the switch from cotton paper on the Lei series started in 1999, making it one of the earlier European adopters of the substrate. The 20 Lei denomination in this run carries the COA (Coat of Arms) variant designation within Pick 119, distinguishing it from transitional printings where the arms differ in detail or color registration.
Polymer notes from the BNR have a known tendency to develop surface scuffing around the transparent window edges under heavy ATM cycling — worth examining on any example claimed to be uncirculated.
