| Obverse description | Central field features a reproduction of the tughra and imperial seal of Sultan Mahmud I rendered in Arabic calligraphy, reading 'Al-Sultan Mahmud Khan' with additional honorific inscriptions and the accession year 1143 AH in stylized sülüs script, all set within a raised beaded inner border. The surrounding annular legend, separated by a dotted border, reads 'TÜRKİYE CUMHURİYETİ' to the left and 'REPUBLIC OF TÜRKİYE' to the right in Latin characters, with a crescent-and-star device at the apex. Mahmud I ruled the Ottoman Empire from 1730 to 1754, coming to power immediately after the Patrona Halil rebellion — a janissary-led uprising that deposed his predecessor Ahmed III and effectively forced the court to abandon the Westernizing reforms of the Tulip Period. His reign saw sustained conflict with both Russia and Austria, though the 1739 Treaty of Belgrade gave the Ottomans an unusually favorable outcome, recovering Belgrade and halting Russian access to the Black Sea for nearly three more decades.
