Pick 48 belongs to the first emission of the Ngân hàng Quốc gia Việt Nam, established in 1951 — which makes a 1948 date worth scrutinizing. The Democratic Republic of Vietnam issued currency through the Bộ Tài chính (Ministry of Finance) before the national bank formally existed, and some catalog attributions conflate the two issuing authorities. The actual 1948 notes were produced under wartime conditions during the French Indochina War, with printing quality varying considerably depending on which regional facility handled production.
Survivors in any collectible state are uncommon; wartime paper, tropical humidity, and the DRV's own currency reforms in 1951 and 1959 removed most examples from circulation permanently.
