Obverse description Central field displays the Portuguese royal coat of arms — a quartered shield bearing five escutcheons in saltire charged with bezants, bordured with seven castles — surmounted by a royal crown and flanked by elaborate baroque scrollwork with floral sprays. The peripheral legend arcs around the upper and lower rim, separated by the crowned shield composition. The entire design is contained within a toothed or milled border.
